SEL Hub Workshop (Virtual - FREE) - Addressing Trauma in Schools: Intensive Strategies for Student Support Staff

In this session, participants will review how trauma impacts the brain in greater depth, expanding on how students may present in the school environment in response to trauma or dysregulation. This will include dissociative (withdrawal) reactions, defiant (acting out) responses, and problems with executive functioning. We will also discuss concrete strategies support staff can use to de-escalate, ground, and regulate students while avoiding re-traumatization or disciplinary action. Goes into more detail on therapeutic strategies that can be used on an individual or group basis, addressing behavior, emotions, and negative beliefs/thoughts.

Prerequisite: Participants must have attended an initial trauma training. This may include Trauma 101; Trauma, The Brain and Learning; or Chaos to Calm.

Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1. Further their understanding of how trauma impacts the brain and student behavior.
2. Utlize strategies to de-escalate, ground, and regulate with students.
3. Identify theraputic strategies that can be used in an individual or group setting.
4. Understand the importance of staff self-care and staff (stress) responses to traumatized and/or dysregulated students.
5. Practice strategies and reflect on what they have learned in small groups.
