ROE #8

SEL Hub Workshop @ IVCC - Teaching with Empathy

October 21

8:30 am - 2:00 pm

Illinois Valley Community College, 815 N Orlando Smith St, Oglesby, IL 61348, USA

Join Lisa Westman, an author, speaker, and consultant who regularly works with school systems internationally to provide professional learning on student-driven differentiation, empathy as the foundation of our instructional practices, standards-based learning, and implementing instructional coaching programs. Before becoming a consultant, Lisa taught 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade (gifted humanities, English language arts, social studies) and was an instructional coach specializing in differentiation in Skokie, IL.

Every single action we take, from our conversations with students to planning and delivering instruction, signifies our level of empathy toward them as individuals. While many teachers believe they are empathetic to their students’ stories, their actions (while well-intended) often implicitly shame students, further adding to the disconnection they feel. Educators’ primary role in today’s educational landscape is to ensure students feel safe and connected, in a consistently empathetic learning environment. This workshop will also include strategies for increasing empathy for yourself - which is the key to managing feelings of burnout, stress, and guilt.

Partial fees for this workshop have been paid for by the McKinney-Vento Grant.
