SEL Hub Workshop (Virtual) - Chaos to Calm: Adopting a Trauma-Informed Approach to Transform Your Classroom

Trauma continues to impact the way our students engage and learn in schools. Join us for this brief overview session to help educators, leaders, and staff understand and mitigate the impact of trauma on self and others. Participants will also learn effective strategies to support students who have experienced trauma, and the importance of staff self-awareness so we can model and co-regulate with students. Participants will also be able to collaborate with presenters to draft initial action plans to address key issues.

Presenter(s): Laura Langes, Psy.D. and Marloes Verhoeven, Psy.D.

Part 1 Learning Objectives:
o Explain what trauma is, how trauma impacts the (learning) brain, and what students’
trauma reactions look like in the school environment.
o Describe how childhood trauma negatively impacts brain development and explain how
this can affect students’ academic, social-emotional, and identity development.
o Shift from a deficit model to a strengths-based, resiliency model in conceptualizing and
responding to student behavior and academic problems.

Part 2 Learning Objectives:
o Identify concrete strategies to help students with trauma (and all students) with
emotion regulation.
o Determine which strategies/interventions to use based on the student’s unsolved
problems, lagging skills, unmet needs, and level of dysregulation.
o Implement universal and targeted strategies to support students with trauma-related
behaviors and their peers and prevent disruptive behavior.
o Embrace the importance of staff self-care and develop an individualized self-care plan to
promote stress health.
o Utilize the guiding principles of a trauma-informed school to guide your interactions
with all students and staff.

Additional Information:
o Brief self-reflection and mindfulness/grounding exercises will be incorporated throughout the presentation.
